Celebrating Delanie: A Beacon of Self-Awareness, Self-Management, and Self-Determination

This March, we shine the spotlight on an extraordinary young individual, Delanie, whose recent experience at the Nature Center not only captured our hearts but also vividly showcased our core assets of ‘Self-Awareness’, ‘Self-Management’, and ‘Self-Determination’.

In the heart of Largo, nestled within the serene environs of the George C. McGough Nature Center, a remarkable story unfolded—one that exemplifies the core values of Friends of the Children - Tampa Bay.

This March, we shine the spotlight on an extraordinary young individual, Delanie C, whose recent experience at the Nature Center not only captured our hearts but also vividly showcased our core assets of ‘Self-Awareness’, ‘Self-Management’, and ‘Self-Determination’.

Delanie’s journey at the Nature Center was one of discovery, not just of the rescued and rehabilitating wildlife that call the center home, but of her own capabilities and limits. Faced with the prospect of trying the mini zip line at the center's playground, Delanie found herself at a crossroads of curiosity and caution. It’s a scenario many of us can relate to—standing on the precipice of an adventure, weighing our eagerness against our fears.

What makes Delanie's story stand out is her methodical approach to overcoming her apprehensions. Rather than shy away entirely or dive in without thought, she chose to engage with her challenge on her terms. Opting to start from the lower end of the zip line, where she felt more comfortable and stable, Delanie gradually built up her confidence. This moment of adaptation and self-assurance was not just about enjoying a playground attraction; it was a profound demonstration of knowing oneself and managing one’s fears.

This approach speaks volumes about the kind of self-awareness we aspire to cultivate in our youth. Delanie’s ability to articulate her feelings, assess her comfort level, and take steps to address her concerns—all while being open to new experiences—embodies the essence of self-determination.

Her adventure at the zip line eventually turned into a triumphant experience, thanks to a blend of personal courage and encouragement from a newfound friend. Delanie's story concluded on a high note, with her expressing eagerness to return to the zip line, transforming initial hesitation into an exhilarating fun.

Delanie’s experience is a powerful reminder of the value of self-awareness and self-management. At a tender age, she has displayed a level of maturity and introspection that many adults strive for. These qualities will undoubtedly serve her well, offering protection against peer pressure and enabling her to make informed decisions as she navigates the complexities of growing up.

Delanie's story, celebrated as our Youth Story of the Month, is not just about a personal achievement; it’s a testament to the environment of encouragement and growth fostered by Friends of the Children - Tampa Bay. As we share Delanie’s journey, we’re reminded of the impact of our mission—to empower youth to engage with their world confidently and on their terms.

We commend Friend, Jerrese, for helping Delanie learn about and express her bravery and self-awareness, and we’re proud to have Delanie as our March student of the month. Her story is a beacon for all our children, illuminating the path of self-discovery and growth. Delanie, and indeed all our youth, represent the bright future of our community, and we look forward to supporting them every step of the way.
