Development Director

Basic Function / Position Objective:

Our Development Director will be instrumental in accomplishing the fundraising goals of the organization to allow us to serve more children year over year. We have ambitious goals in terms of serving children in the Tampa Bay area facing the greatest obstacles to their success and this position will help lead that growth. They will work alongside our Executive Director (ED) and our Board of Directors, with support from our staff and in coordination with the rest of the Friends National organization, to help determine and successfully meet the organization’s fundraising goals. Compensation is competitive and aligned with experience with an annual bonus based on achievements against plan.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities:

· Work effectively – with ED, Board and independently -- to identify and cultivate donors including individuals, corporations and foundations; develop and maintain ongoing relationships with major donors

· Support the ED and Board of Directors with developing and executing an annual resource development plan, including revenue targets and systems and strategies necessary to move our fundraising to the next level

· Achieve planned / budgeted objectives for new prospects, presentations/meetings and in-year and multi-year revenue generation

· Perform prospect research on individuals, corporations and foundations to evaluate and identify prospects for corporate and foundation grants; develop, prioritize and mine a pipeline of fundraising sources

· Demonstrate and create processes for showing donors gratitude in timely, appropriate, and meaningful ways

· Actively participate in planning, budgeting and managing the growth and development of the organization

· In partnership with the team, plan and implement a minimum of two successful fundraising events yearly

· Plan and execute special funding-raising opportunities (end-of-year-end appeal, Annual Report, etc.)

· Collaborate on a basic communications plan that will focus on educating and raising visibility for donors and prospects. This should include social media channels and electronic newsletters.

· Familiarity with state, local and national philanthropic, governmental and business communities

· Ability to research, prepare, submit and manage grant proposals and reports

· Make, and in many cases attend, appointments with/for ED with foundation officers and other prospects

· Prepare timely, specific, and relevant materials for development meetings and conversations

· Identify and utilize creative methods for gathering stories from Friends to be shared as appropriate

· Strive to ensure that organization’s commitment to equity is reflected in all decisions, communications, and processes

Essential Skills and Abilities:

· Be willing and able to attend and actively participate in team meetings, staff functions, and development events

· Excellent organization, time management, delegation and follow-up skills

· Possess commitment to extreme attention to detail, including but not limited to ability to implement self-checking procedures for data entry keeping accurate track of activities and meetings and notes on donor and potential donor interactions in organization’s system of record, produce accurate correspondence and reports and produce and edit written materials accurately and consistently

· Have excellent project management and organizational skills to routinely manage and prioritize daily work and meet multiple deadlines simultaneously, especially during high-volume times of the year

· Demonstrate ability to work independently as well as in a team setting

· Have a passion for serving youth facing the most challenging situations

· Be a self-starter with high level of initiative and willingness to learn

· Possess excellent written and verbal communication skills

· Be social media savvy

Required Education and Abilities:

· Bachelor’s degree or 7 years equivalent experience required

· Provide specific evidence of success in fundraising in a not for profit setting

Preferred Experience:

· Three to seven years of professional experience in fundraising desired

· Experience with governmental funding opportunities a plus

· Familiarity with Donor Perfect a plus

Professional Mentor "Friend" - Tampa Bay

Friends of the Children is a nonprofit that is impacting generational change by empowering youth through relationships with professional mentors. We do this by providing children facing the most obstacles with a long-term, paid, professional mentor, who we call a “Friend,” from kindergarten through high school graduation, 12+ years – no matter what. We are currently seeking an extraordinary professional to embark on a new career journey as a Friend at our Tampa Chapter.  The successful candidate has experience in living and working in a racially, culturally and economically diverse community.

Job Description:

We are currently seeking a mentor for our childhood program (Kindergarten to 5 Grade) to serve as a positive adult role model to elementary children and develop loving, caring, and sustained relationships with each child. For each child, a Friend will set positive expectations; nurture and promote each child’s strength, talents, and abilities; help ensure physical and emotional well-being; teach life and academic skills; provide enrichment activities; and model responsible behavior. A Friend will fully document activities and participate in the ongoing evaluation process. Friends will work primarily one-on-one with their children. A Friend must know, understand, honor, and support the organization’s mission, vision, values, and principles, and be able to clearly articulate the organization’s function.

Essential responsibilities:

  • Develop and sustain a long-term, caring, protective, and loving relationship with each child  
  • Spend time with children, one-on-one
  • Set realistic expectations and goals based on each child’s strengths, talents, abilities, and needs
  • Teach life skills and help develop a talent/skill/area of interest with each child
  • Provide enrichment resources and activities that include opportunities for cultural awareness
  • Develop positive relationships with families, teachers, and others involved in each child’s life
  • Reinforce basic academic skills
  • Maintain a 40-hour work schedule that includes afternoons, evenings, and some weekends (normal working days are Monday through Fridays with occasional weekends required)
  • Maintain spending within budgetary guidelines
  • Complete, distribute, and collect time summaries, activity journals, short-term plans, expense reports, and evaluations materials accurately and in a timely manner
  • Attend and actively participate in team meeting and staff functions
  • Maintain First Aid/CPR certification
  • Provide information and support to the development and executive team on related activities
  • Fulfill other responsibilities as requested

Additional qualifications:

  • Two-year experience working with children 
  • Willingness to commit for a minimum of three years
  • Advocate to secure additional resources, opportunities, and services for youth as appropriate
  • Assist with systems navigation in schools to secure conditions for optimal academic success
  • Demonstrated ability to work with children in varied capacities and settings
  • Ability to develop trusting relationships
  • Ability to work independently and as a team player
  • Ability to manage several concurrent issues and solve problems effectively
  • A sense of humor is a plus

HOURLY PAY

$18.20/HR with the opportunity for performance incentives
